Understanding Peg Tube Placement

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement is often necessary to provide nutrition, medication, and/or fluids for patients with difficulty swallowing. At GastroCare of El Paso, we offer a wide range of specialized gastroenterology procedures to diagnose and treat digestive disorders, including PEG tube placement for better nutrition. Our clinic focuses on delivering superior care in a compassionate and warm environment.

Who May Need Peg Tube Placement?

Some conditions can actually prevent a patient from eating or make it difficult to swallow food/medication, which may call for a feeding tube. The PEG procedure is performed by inserting a feeding tube into the stomach through the abdominal wall. A small incision is made on your abdomen on the left side, then a flexible tube (also known as a catheter) with a flared tip or balloon attached is inserted. Depending on the specific circumstances, our El Paso gastroenterologist may use this tube on a temporary or permanent basis.

A PEG tube placement may be necessary for:

  • Patients who cannot swallow easily
  • Birth defects of the mouth
  • Birth defects of the esophagus
  • Birth defects of the stomach
  • Malnourished patients
  • Patients who continually aspirate
